GULF SHORES, Ala.—Sweeping the men's hammer and sending several competitors to finals, the Concordia men's track & field team took an early lead with 29 points on the first day of action at the NAIA National Championships on Thursday.
 
Darien Moore (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield H.S.)Adam Riddle (Fox Island, Wash./Gig Harbor H.S.) and Nate Moses (Fresno, Calif./Bullard H.S.) went 1-2-3 in the hammer while Tyler Callahan (Estacada, Ore./Estacada H.S.) added a fourth-place finish in the javelin to give Concordia its first-day haul. In addition, Jordan Reeher (Prineville, Ore./Crook County H.S.) (400 hurdles), Matthew Clowes (Stoke-on-Trent, England/Westwood College) (1,500) and Brad Prettyman (Estacada, Ore./Estacada H.S.) (1,500) survived their preliminary races to advance to the finals in their respective events.
 
On the women's side, Emma Buchholz (Sheridan, Ore./Sheridan H.S.) earned All-American honors with a second-place finish while the 3,200-meter relay team navigated through the prelims to compete in the finals on Friday.
 
Behind Concordia's 29 points were Oklahoma City's 14 points and St. Francis' (Ill.) 11 points.
 
British Columbia captured the first-day lead on the women's side with 23 points, just ahead of Bethel (Ind.) 20 1/2. Concordia's eight points puts the Cavaliers in a tie for 10th place.
